Letter from Tremonith

Letter from Tremonith

Avid Pern fan for over 23 years now. I always thought there should be something written extolling the poor, lowly, seemingly unloved, reviled, lonely, yet indespensible Watch-Wher. Kisk? Interesting name for a Pernese animal.

Your style is noticeably divergent from your mother’s style while still possessing elements of the Familiar Style we have come to love from Anne. That’s a Good thing Though, as No artist should be exactly the same in style as another artist-regardless of creative medium and family relationships. I did, however, greatly enjoy the story, and I look forward to the next installment.

I have often wondered about the Western Continent. What sort of critters might reside thereon. I mean it seems to me there should be more native species than are ever mentioned in any of the stories. We get a few interesting hints that there is a range of wildlife, but, in truth the Pernese Ecosystem seems too limited to be genuinely viable over the long term.

Not to mention that Evolution would produce all manner of variations on the listed Pernese species. Especially considering the incredible sensus of Pernese Human, Dragon, & Fire-Lizard characters. One would think that there would be an equally detailed list of native wildlife to match and balance this aspect of Anne’s creative brilliance. And we still have no idea of what Thread becomes once it goes subterrainian. That too has been discussed by the characters in the older books, but, nothing so far has been explained in the way of thread’s evolution. or does it just die?

Well, I look forward to your next Pern experience.

Breathe Deep, Fly High, Soar Happily,

Tremonith ~ Time Traveling Cheshire Dragon from the lost Dimension.

Tremonith,

I’ve edited you a bit to fit in the format (I hope you don’t mind).

Thank you for the compliments.

I haven’t thought about the Western Continent. I have thought a lot about the Pernese ecosystem and I agree that it seems under-represented. I expect that as most of the Pern stories have dealt with dragons and riders — peoples who find their time fully occupied in fighting Threads — that we haven’t found the sorts of people who might run across and catalog more Pernese critters.

You might be pleased to know that you get a bit (and only a bit) more of that in Dragonsblood — and that the door is left open for further explorations of the Pernese ecosystem. In some respects Dragonsblood merely lays the groundwork for further explorations of the Pernese ecosystem. I suspect some of those stories (if there are any) may only be told after the Ninth Pass, just because before then most of the humans are too busy trying to survive to really notice any of the native flora or fuana that they haven’t already encountered. For that matter, I can’t remember when was the last time I dug up a patch of earth just to see what lived in it (I might have been eight or so).

As for Threads — there has actually been some behind-the-scenes discussions of its life-cycles but nothing has been cast in stone — or flamed to char either.

Cheers,
Todd
