Letter from Michael

Hi Todd,

I was just looking at the Quicktime movie posted in your photos section.

Nice, with the exception as you noted in your news item, the pixelating.

I’m currently involved in doing frame by frame animation, and have found that to get the best results, to try with different setting, data rate, quality etc.

I have also found that depending on which video codec you use, can also affect the quality of the final video.

I’ve only recently found your site, and wanted to thank you for the panels you were on at Dragon*Con 2003.

I enjoyed very listening to your talks.

Although I didn’t introduce myself to you afterwards, I was the voice in the audience, of the space flight panel who corrected you about the location of the people who were attempting put a man in space.

I hope I’ve remembered that right, sorry if I haven’t.

I enjoyed Dragon’s Kin, and look forward to Dragon’s Blood when it’s finished.

May the Farce Be With You

Michael Smith aka Sokar

Hi Michael!

Yeah, I didn’t want to put anything up that was too large to download. Also, I hadn’t run across the pixelating effect before, so it was a bit of a surprise. The whole show was really me just playing with stuff and I decided that I’d share.

I had a lot of fun at Dragon*con last year and hope to have the same again this year.

I’m glad that you liked Dragon’s Kin. I just got my editor’s notes in for Dragonsblood (I think that’s how we’re spelling it, rather than “Dragon’s Blood” — but titles change) and so am gearing up for revisions.

Cheers,
Todd

-Hi,
Aggiecon is comming up. For those of us who have a copy, should we plan to bring our Pern board games to College Station with us like we do to dragoncon?
Thanx

Hi, Steven!

I dunno. I wasn’t planning on bringing mine because I’m not sure how much free time I’ll have. However, feel free!

Hi Todd,

Thank you for your reply to my first letter. I have a few small questions for you:

Is Kindan going to be related to the Master Harper of Pern in Lessa’s time or am I just being over imaginative?

Also, does your Mum plan on doing a book on the last ever year of the Pass or will you consider that one your self?

What will happen when Thread falls no more on Pern?

Also, any more stories in the pipe line regarding the dolphins of Pern?

I would so much like to see a sequel.

Sorry I have asked so many questions but my curiosity has got the better of me.

Yours quizzically,
Stewart

Stewart,

You’re being overimaginative, Kindan will not be related to MasterHarper Robinton.

Mum’s been thinking of writing something about the last Threadfall in the Ninth Pass.

I think F’lar has made it pretty apparent what he thinks will happen at the end of Thread.

I don’t know of any more stories about the dolphins of Pern but you are not the only one who has asked.

Cheers,
Todd

Todd,

I’ve been reading Pern books since I was twelve (about ten years) and have as many McCaffrey stories as I can get my hands on, I really love them. I get migraines daily and can’t get out much so your mother and now you help me going. Any way, besides thanking you I’m writing because I have lots of questions so here are a some:

1) Now that the Pernese know white dragons come from the small eggs they normally between could more people impress them?

2) Could there be white fire-lizards?

3) Homosexual males impress greens could homosexual females impress blues?

4) Have you thought of writing crossover books with other McCaffrey series? Are there any?

That’s all I can remember right now. Thank you.
Sue

Hi Sue!

Sorry to hear about the migraines.

Some answers to your questions:

1) Most small eggs aren’t viable, so they won’t hatch. Ruth is exceptional. I don’t think customs will change. I don’t think there’ll be more white dragons.

2) No, there aren’t white fire-lizards. Sports like Ruth are an unintended by-product of genetic tinkering.

3) I think the way it goes is that men who are more homosexual than heterosexual tend to Impress greens, those that are slightly less so Impress blues, those that are even less so Impress browns, and bronzes are only interested in those who are predominantly heterosexual. Sexuality is a range.

Mum has decided that the only dragons to Impress women are greens and golds.

4) Mum is not interested in writing crossover books and I think she’s right.

I hope that answers all your questions!

Todd
