Another letter from Chad

Sorry to bother you again, Todd,

Why didn’t the matter/anti-matter explosions that caused the two Long Intervals render the Star Stones ineffective? I’m not an astrophysicist, but it would seem to me that any explosion powerful enough to shift the Red planet’s orbital plane would mess up the delicate calculations used to site the Stones, right?

Thanks, again, for letting me gripe,
-Chad.

Hello Chad,

I think the answer is that we’re looking at a very small perturbation in an overall orbit. Planets, even the Red Star, are quite massive and while a matter/anti-matter explosion might sound like a big deal, it’s more like butterfly wings in the orbital scheme of things.

Cheers,
Todd

Hi Todd,

Ever since I read “Dragonsdawn” many years ago, one question has repeatedly come to mind. No matter how desperate the colonists were following the horrific tragedies of First Fall and the volcanic eruptions, why wasn’t any thought put into infrastructure for the Northern Fort Complex? In other words, why didn’t Tarvi Telgar, Drake Bonneau and co. set up a hydroelectric system that would last much longer than the solar panels erected on the fire heights? I would think that if they could build the fort and surrounding buildings, SOME thought would have been spared for long-term survival?

Thanks for letting me gripe,
-Chad.

Hi Chad,

Mmm.

I can think of no complex machinery that could be designed to last for 2500 years.

But consider that most generators weigh several tons and building decent dams require hundred perhaps thousands of tons of concrete, it seems quite likely that the colonists just didn’t have the material — and a lot of what they had was lost when the volcano blew.

Also, long-term survival is something people tend to think about after they’ve managed to recover from their short-term disasters.

Cheers,
Todd

Letter from Renee

Dear Todd,

Being a huge fan of your mom’s and knowing she is going to be at Dragon con is a huge thing for me. My only problem is that I can not find the information concerning what days she will be attending! I would like to meet the writer that has held my imagination transfixed since I was in middle school. If you know her appearance dates would you be willing to answer this e-mail? Georgia is a long drive from Michigan and I would not want to miss your mother.

Thanks,
Renee M. Horn

Dear Renee,

Mum is planning on being there the whole convention, as far as I know. She’ll probably be on several panels and she’s planning on doing some signings. She may also appear impromptu. She’s turning 78 this April so she does have to conserve her strength.

Cheers,
Todd
