Letter from Danielle

Dear Mr. McCaffrey,

First off I wanna say how much fun it is to read your mother’s work… and yours. And while I am only 19 I can appreciate all the hard work the both of you go through.

When I was 12 years old I didn’t like school very much, and to get away I would go down to the library, the workers didn’t mind very much ’cause I was so quiet and while browsing threw the shelfs one day I found one of your mother’s books, Dragonflight, I was hooked. I couldn’t put it down. I got yelled at countless times, and I actually had the books taken from my hands twice so I would get some work done. Then finally me and one of my teachers came to a compromise, I could read for the last 20 minutes of class if I got all my work done.

Well, this isn’t some big dramatic story about how I turned my life around and became the highest honors student in my year. Far from it. Honestly, I barely Graduated, except for in my english class where I was one of the best (yeah, guess which class I got to read in).

Then, in October my dream (or one of them) finally came true. I got a job at a bookstore. Best job I’ll ever have. Then in November, I got another great gift. Your book came out. I was given a cart for taking books out of our back room at work by my manager to be shelved, needless to say it wasn’t a very extraordinary day. But then I saw your book. I was flippin’ out.

On my lunch break that day I actually got in trouble. I was so wrapped up in your book that I didnt notice the time, and had taken an extra 15 minutes. I felt really bad, but I didn’t apologize, ’cause I didn’t see myself doing anything wrong. I didn’t get fired, but I had to do all the shelving when I was in the store for a week.

Well by now your probably wondering where I am going with this. And to make a long story short, I just wanted to thank you and your mother for writing so many wonderful stories that kept me out of trouble (most times) and kept me enthralled for so long.

Oh, and one more thing. Yet again, I’m working the day your new book comes out. This time I’ll make sure that I only take my half hour.

Thanks for putting up with my senseless prattle for so long.

Danielle

Hi Danielle!

Thank you for writing. Please feel free to call me Todd rather than Mr. McCaffrey and I certainly don’t think of your letter as “senseless prattle.”

I’m glad that you got through English reading good books. Dragonflight is a particularly good read, isn’t it?

I understand about working at a bookstore and getting to read. That sounds great.

I hope you don’t get in trouble with Dragonsblood. I remember when “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix” came out — I waited in line at midnight with everyone else to get my pre-ordered copy and then read it before 10 a.m.!

Cheers,
Todd

Hi Todd

Happy New Year

I’ve just read Dragon’s Kin which I really enjoyed, and am looking forward to Dragonsblood when I can get it from Amazon.fr

I’ve been a fan of your mother for years and even went to visit her in Wicklow one year with my husband.

I just thought you’d like to know that I love your collaboration, and I’m sure I’ll enjoy your solo works just as much. I remember reading comments in her forewords from years ago how proud she was of your first book being published under the name Todd Johnson. I’m sure she’s more proud of you now.

Keep up the good work.

BTW, there’s no need for an answer to this, I just believe in telling people what I think of them!

Hi Sadhbh,

Thanks for the compliments. It really does help to hear them, particularly when a novel is not behaving itself (Dragon’s Fire has just started to behave, whew!).

I hope you enjoy Dragonsblood, too.

Cheers,
Todd

Letter from Motorcycle Gramma

Hi, Todd…

Just wanted to tell you that I scored an Advance Readers’ Copy of Dragonsblood from eBay, last night (seem to have a problem with immediate gratification, couldn’t wait to read it, but will get a hard copy later on). Thanks to innate poverty and need to economize, I have never been able to get all my McCaffreys from the book stores… so, last year about this time, I started learning how to bid on eBay. Now at last I have just about everything written by Anne, with the bonus of some autographed copies and interesting artifacts. Hmmm… bad choice of last word… especially since I’m only 10 years younger than your mum…

I’m delighted that you have inherited and broadened such writing talent. It is obvious that you paid your dues just as Anne did; and I admire you both for your creativity and strength.

Sorry for the predictable laudatory fan mail. Can’t help it, I love the good writing and flowing styles of you both. I also have most of the unabridged audiobook versions, and will be looking for Dragonsblood in that format since I listen to them every time I drive.

Please keep up the wonderful work; and I send you and your mum the very best of wishes for health and happiness.

your slobbering fan,
Motorcycle Gramma

Hi!

What sort of motorcycle? I rode Hondas for a while in Ireland and then switched to a really sweet belt-drive Kawasaki 250 that revved to 11,000 rpm and would do 105 mph downhil with a tailwind (or so I’m told — I, of course, would never consider engaging in such dangerous tests of speed, particularly as it would entail dangling my feet over my turn signals and lying flat on the tank).

I’m glad that you liked the ARC (Advanced Reader’s Copy) but I hope you get a proper copy soon — because the ARC was printed on first-pass page proofs, which means that it’s missing all the fixes I put in when I read it. Things like “Lemos” mis-spelled at “Lemose” and other things more important. Also, the ARC doesn’t have that lovely Les Edwards cover.

But I am thrilled that you liked the book and thank you very much for the compliments!

Cheers,
Todd

Letter from Stewart — Art College in UK

Hi Todd,

I was reading the letter page and I saw the one from Dee asking about art collages in the UK for her daughter. I know of one but not a lot of info but Dee can look it up on the net, it is called Grays Art College. I think it is based in Aberdeen, Scotland but I’m not sure. Hope this helps.

Stewart

Hi Stewart,

Thanks for the info. I hope Dee notices it.

Cheers,
Todd
