Letter from Dee

Hello again Todd;

I loved Dragon’s Kin and haven’t yet gotten a copy of Dragonsblood but I’m sure it’ll be wonderful. I wanted to thank you for your reply as well as thanking the fan who suggested Grays’ Art College in Scotland. I’ve advised my daughter of this and she’s doing research.

In the previous weeks we not only lost our home but my entire Pern collection AND all of the other books I’d collected over the past year. Bad things happen to good people but I’m surely tired of being the recipient.

I think I’ll restart my collecting of the books with Dragonsblood and work from there.

Many blessings to you and yours
Dee

Hi Dee,

I’m really sorry to hear about your loss. That’s got to be rough. I know what you mean about bad things happening to good people. I can’t imagine it’ll help all that much but if you send me your address, I’ll send you a bookplate to stick into Dragonsblood.

Cheers,
Todd

Dear Todd

Hi, so far, so good. The story is off to a halfway decent start, let’s hope it makes it, huh? Well, I don’t know if it will make it as a novel, but it sure will do the job as a short story. By the way, is Anne making any new Pern novels lately? Well, please give her my regards, thanks!

Sincerly

Midnight Dragon
(previously Nhorad)

Dude,

What’s with the name change? You’re welcome to it but I feel like I should be addressing you as “the person formerly known at Nhorad” or something. If you want to be Midnight Dragon, so be it. But only one name change a year, okay?

Great on the story! Keep it up. The best thing you can do for yourself is to tell yourself that you’ll do the best you can. Also, short stories are cool. Check out “The Writers of the Future” and submit your story when it’s done — it’s a nice way to break out as a writer big-time.

Mum and I are working on “Dragon’s Fire” which is a sequel to “Dragon’s Kin” and we’ll be doing “Dragon’s Harp” as well. She has talked a bit about wriitng some more at the end of the Ninth Pass so we’ll all just have to cross our fingers.

Cheers,
Todd

Hi Todd,

Have just finished Dragonsblood & loved it. You did a great job &, I notice, nudged out a few more unanswered questions (please say just to whet our appetites!). Having loved the Pern books for many years I’m delighted that your Mum is allowing the story to continue. It’s in good hands. (I do hope, though, that she will contribute for many years yet!)

I gather Dragonsblood won’t be out here in Australia for a while yet but a local bookshop was happy to order me a copy from the US. It arrived yesterday morning so needless to say, I’m a little sleep-deprived this morning! It was worth it and the stories set in earlier Pern times are fascinating too. I’ve often wondered how such-and-such developed or what so-and-so’s people ended up becoming, especially since Dragonsdawn has always been one of my most favourite books – ever. If you saw my bookcases/s/s/s… that comment makes sense!

Just as an aside, is there likely to be another Freedom book? I enjoyed that series so much also.

Thanks very much and I’m looking forward to your next book,

regards
Meg

Hi Meg,

I’m glad you liked Dragonsblood! I hope you can catch up on your sleep.

I don’t know if there’ll be more Freedom books. Last time I talked with Mum about it, I got the impression that she didn’t feel a strong need. I found the whole idea quite interesting and thought that there was room for a lot of expansion — like those other colonized worlds (particularly the intolerant ones).

Mum will be 79 this April 1st (and I’ll be 49 — eek! — twenty-six days later) so, as far as I’m concerned, if she wants to rest on her laurels I’m all for it. If, however, she gets inclined to do more than collaborate with me, I’m all for that too.

Cheers,
Todd

Hi Todd,

Wanted to say that I just finished reading DRAGONSBLOOD and I enjoyed it immensely. Others have said what I would also say – that it’s a fine read, a wonderful story with characters it’s easy to care for and cry over. There’s something I’d like to add: I enjoyed the lovely ending that encourages one to read other Pern books. Thank you for all that hard work and for giving us another great Pern story. I also thank your Mum for giving you the Smiley face go-ahead! So glad she felt confident she could. She had good reason for it, obviously! I’m looking forward to the sequels to Dragon’s Kin and your own next Pern book.

Also wanted to say that I loved Ceara’s picture of you for the jacket of your book! That was a neat one!

Take care, and enjoy your well-deserved success with DRAGONSBLOOD!

Linda

Hi Linda,

Thank you! I’m glad that you liked Dragonsblood. And you’re right, it was a lot of hard work (and no small amount of trepidation).

The jacket photo came about when Ceara and I were playing with my video camera which has a digitial still option. It turned out quickly nice, didn’t it?

Cheers,
Todd
