Letter from Larry

I enjoy all of the Pern books. I have an idea or two about a new “mission” for the Dragons and their riders that I think you might like.
I’d love to talk to you about it.

Larry

Hi Larry,

I’m glad you like the Pern books. I’m afraid I really can’t accept outside ideas.
There have been too many cases where people have been honestly convinced that their idea was stolen unscrupulously and have instigated costly legal battles that have left neither side feeling anything but poorer.

Rest assured that Mum and I have plenty of ideas still for Pern (for one thing, no one’s written about either of the Long Intervals) — and I hope that we’ve got some interesting surprises for people reading about the Third Pass.

Cheers,
Todd

I have just finished your Dragonsblood. I am very pleased. You have told a good story. You and your Mum are different writers, but I am so happy you have the feeling of the story. Please keep writing and hoping your Mum has not stopped. I cried and cried and was wonderfully surprised again and again.

Thank you. I’m glad that you liked Dragonsblood.

Your encouragement helps me with the next one — Dragon’s Fire (or maybe Dragonsfire).

Cheers,
Todd

Hi, last year or quite a few months ago, I read on a fan site about a possible movie being made about Pern, What everbecame of that??? We now have the technology to do a very realistic rendering of the first book.

Hi Vanessa,

Yes, we’ve had the technology to do decent dragons for a long time now. The trouble is connecting the talent, the money, and Pern all together. There have been so many attempts over the last twenty years, many of them involving excellent people trying their utmost to bring Pern to life in a manner we’d all love to see. And none of them worked out.

Perhaps someday we’ll see another attempt. Cross your fingers.

Cheers,
Todd

Dear Todd,

THANK YOU. I didn’t think it could be done as well as you have but you took me right back to Pern, without a hitch. I have just finished “Dragonsblood” and it left me wanting to go out at 11:30 pm to search out a book store. One that had your next book. Unfortunately I can’t time it so I will have to wait. You kept me on the edge of my page sometimes and I loved that. I have been spending many years of bedtime reading, visiting Pern, and in this world where nothing ever lasts, these books have been a wonderful way to fly away every night. Thank you for letting me peak into my book and visit my old friends.

Your mother did a wonderful thing by creating Pern. I am very greatful to both of you and the others.

From a girl ( who is 55 ) who sits near the edge of the bowl to watch all that flys by, Thank you..

Sincerely

Teresa

Dear Teresa,

My pleasure! And my apologies about the unfulfilled book lust. I understand completely.

As a very excellent alternative, may I recommend Wen Spencer’s marvelous “Alien Taste” series? Be sure to get all four books — that should last you maybe even two whole days (I remember swearing when I couldn’t find a bookstore open at 3 a.m. to sell me the sequels).

Understanding and having suffered from book lust ourselves, Mum and I are working to finish the next Pern book.

Cheers,
Todd
