Hello, Mr. McCaffrey,
As a long-time fan of the world your mother created and you so ably continue, I have long hoped that the world of Pern could be brought to life. I remember that there was once some talk of bringing them to film, but that it was decided that the current state-of-the-art could not do a convincing job of it.
I have recently seen the movie “Avatar,” and all I could think during that film (other than what a glorious experience it was) was that now the art of film has reached the caliber that could do the world of Pern justice and introduce so many more people to this glorious creation.
Have there been any feelers put out on either side of this equation with an eye towards bringing Pern to life on the big screen?
Thank you for your time.
Eve
Hello Eve,
There has been and continues to be talk of bringing Pern to life on the big screen.
I agree that Avatar demonstrates that the technical problems are resolved (they were pretty much solved all the way back when The Empire Strikes Back was released).
More important, Avatar had something flying in it. And riders!
So now, for the first time, someone can pitch the film and mention Avatar’s flying Banshees as an example of a successful film with “dragons” in it.
So, we cross our fingers and wait for someone to realize how many billions of dollars they’ll make on an investment of a measly $200 million or so (just an estimate).
Cheers,
Todd
P.S.: And, of course, it’ll be available in IMAX 3D — how’s that for a big dragon? 🙂
