Letter from Becky

I just wanted to send you a quick note telling you how much I’ve enjoyed your books. I’ve been a fan of the Pern books since middle school, and I’m so glad the series won’t be ending anytime soon. I do have one question. Will we be hearing from Cristov/C’tov in any of the new books? I really liked his character and he seemed to disappear after impressing his dragon.

Dear Becky,

Yes, we’ll be seeing something of C’tov in Dragongirl!

Cheers,
Todd

Dear Mr McCaffrey,

I wanted to drop you a line, and say thank you for your Pern books. I have been enjoying them, and I look forward to reading more of your science fiction.

Thank you,

Phillip

Dear Phillip,

Thank you! I’m glad you’re enjoying them and I hope you’ll like the future books, too.

Also, me apologize for clipping off your last name but I think that, for privacy/security purposes, it’s a good idea to not have all that information available for robots/zombies and other strange web creatures to fish off my website.

Cheers,
Todd

Hi Todd,

I just read one of your replies about writing a book centering around the Nathi wars.

I just wanted to let you know that there’s another Pern fan out there who is firmly in support of this story being told. I’m not concerned about it taking place off-Pern, or if it doesn’t wrap into a pretty ending. I would just love to see the story told, and I think all Pern fans would realize that a story about the Nathi Wars couldn’t possibly be very upbeat.

I’ve been wanting to know what happened (along with many other fans I’ve read on annemccaffreyfans.org) ever since I finished reading Dragonsdawn for the first time 7 years ago, and you would make a fan very happy if you managed to get around to writing it one day.

Thanks, and take care

Hi Micah,

Thanks, that’s nice to know.

However, I’m afraid that you, me, and Mum are probably outnumbered by all the other fans who’d like another novel set on Pern.

Cheers,
Todd

Letter from Eve

Hello, Mr. McCaffrey,

As a long-time fan of the world your mother created and you so ably continue, I have long hoped that the world of Pern could be brought to life. I remember that there was once some talk of bringing them to film, but that it was decided that the current state-of-the-art could not do a convincing job of it.

I have recently seen the movie “Avatar,” and all I could think during that film (other than what a glorious experience it was) was that now the art of film has reached the caliber that could do the world of Pern justice and introduce so many more people to this glorious creation.

Have there been any feelers put out on either side of this equation with an eye towards bringing Pern to life on the big screen?

Thank you for your time.

Eve

Hello Eve,

There has been and continues to be talk of bringing Pern to life on the big screen.

I agree that Avatar demonstrates that the technical problems are resolved (they were pretty much solved all the way back when The Empire Strikes Back was released).

More important, Avatar had something flying in it. And riders!

So now, for the first time, someone can pitch the film and mention Avatar’s flying Banshees as an example of a successful film with “dragons” in it.

So, we cross our fingers and wait for someone to realize how many billions of dollars they’ll make on an investment of a measly $200 million or so (just an estimate).

Cheers,
Todd

P.S.: And, of course, it’ll be available in IMAX 3D — how’s that for a big dragon? 🙂
