Bands opening for Tegan and Sara

Bands opening for Tegan and Sara

One of the cool things about Tegan and Sara is that, remembering what it was like on their way up (they’ve been on the tour circuit for coming on 12 years), they like to highlight new bands (most artists do this) and have them open for them.

The two bands at Copley were Steel Train and Holly Miranda. They were both amazing (we bought their CDs).

Tegan and Sara

Ceara and I were at the Tegan and Sara concert in Copley Hall, San Diego last Wednesday (I missed a class and we were really tired the next day).

It was a great concert but the fans were distressing. They were shouting and interrupting when Tegan and/or Sara were bantering with their usual charm. I think people sometimes get too carried away in their own world — being in one’s own world is a great thing but when lots of other people are also around, I think it’s smart to take notice and make allowances rather than demanding sole (soul) attention.

It also seems that big stars and musicians attract the sort of attention that gets hard to handle. I’m glad that Pern fans, on the whole, don’t behave like that (and it does make me wonder what’ll happen when Pern gets a big, flashy movie).

Those of you who don’t know Tegan and Sara should give them a listen — you’ve probably already heard them if you followed the early “Gray’s Anatomy” as their song “Where Does the Good Go?” was played on it. (And I’d like to acknowledge the brilliance of whoever was picking music for “Gray’s Anatomy” — some really good stuff!)

You can check them out at Tegan and Sara.

Education and evening classes

Education and evening classes

I’m taking two evening classes at my local community college, Pierce College (here in the wonderful San Fernando Valley, or “LA” to everyone not living in LA).

I’m taking an Introduction to Flash CS4 class and a JavaScript class.

It’s rather funny as I’ve taught myself every computer language I know but having a set meeting schedule and syllabus makes it easier for me to concentrate on the learning and gives me a resource for questions that I don’t have simply working on my own.

I’m enjoying both classes immensely and have learned stuff that I wouldn’t have on my own (simply because an instructor spends time considering learning resources and also gears toward a wider audience).

I think that everyone should be encouraged to continue their education throughout life and that we’re always learning.

So far, as I’m just learning, I haven’t produce anything of an earth-shattering nature, so there’s nothing I’m quite ready to share with you all (although the Flash work will definitely show up in some future web-based stuff).

The Page Proofs for Dragongirl are here!

The Page Proofs for Dragongirl are here!

Yesterday morning I got in the page proofs for Dragongirl. Page proofs are the last stage prior to actual printing. The page proofs are used to make the famous Advanced Reading Copies (ARCs).

Typos caught in scanning the page proofs are, understandably, visible in their full glory (or infamy) in the ARCs.

I started going through the pages (because page proofs are the individual typesetter pages) yesterday. About halfway through the “For New Readers to Pern” introduction, I thought to myself that there would certainly be no typos in this section — it’s the one section that’s been read the most. Well… hah! The very last paragraph started with the word “Buy” instead of “But” which made for very interesting reading!
