Letter from Jessi

Letter from Jessi

My middle school librarian introduced me to your mother’s books. Dragonsdawn was the only one my schools library had. I’d just had my apendix out and was desperatly bored bc I cd hardly walk much less participate in any of the sports I played at the time so I was spending gym class in the library. She handed me the book and told me it was by her favorite author. It was the first book I ever read for pleasure and bc of that book I fell in love with reading. She was a big fan of your mothers work and had a complete set of every book your mother had ever written up to that point (it was 1994) and she graciously let me borrow the pern series from her home library two at a time until I had finished the series four months later. She then loaned me all of Ms McCaffreys other books one or two at a time until I had read them all.

I want you to know those books instiilled in me a lifelong love of reading that I have passed on to my children and I now have a small home library of my on which I add to whenever I’m able. Most of my books come from yard sales or thrift stores but Im going to continue collecting all my life and I hope one day to need an entire room to house them.

Yesterday I got a wonderful suprise. My husband knows that I’m always searching our local thrift store for books from the Pern series bc I want to someday have as complete a collection as my old librarian of the books I’ve so loved but I’m often disapointed and have managed so far to find only five of them. To celebrate the day he first saw me he called the books a million near our home and found out that they had a few of them and bought me all five of those not already on my shelf. Imagine my thrill and suprise when I realised that all five were books I’d never read before!

And not only that but you had continued the series. Thank you for continuing in your mothers footsteps. She was a truly brilliant woman and both of you are amazing authors. I look forward so much to revisiting a world of which I’ve long believed I’d seen everything there was to see. I also look forward to finding more books you’ve written as you are now my favorite newly discovered (by me anyway) author. May you have long life and all the joy it has to offer.

Mrs Jessica Brasher.

P. S. It would be the thrill of a lifetime to hear back from you. I wish you were close enough for me to ask you to autograph one of my books but as that isn’t possible if you have the time to respond to this email it wd be very much apreciated. God bless Jessi

Dear Jessi,

Thanks for writing!

I’m glad that Mum’s books (and mine) have given you such joy. She’d be just as thrilled as I and, with me, would also bless your librarian — all writers I know have a love of librarians and I’m glad that yours was so kind and recognized (and nurtured) a kindred spirit.

Thank you for your kind words,

Cheers,

Todd

Letter from Kirsty

Hi Todd,

Your work, and that of your mother were an inspiration to me since the day I learned to read. I’ve reread ‘the White Dragon’, so many times I’m surprised the book hasn’t fallen apart. Your work, and the world you write within has been a refuge for me so many times when everything else seemed to be going wrong.

This week, I had an art exhibition in which I displayed various favourite characters from books I’ve read. Amongst them, and a favourite of most people, myself included, was a white (Or patchy coloured) dragon called Ruth, a piece made both to signify one of the most important stories I’ve read, and also made to honour Anne McCaffrey for all she did for readers everywhere, a task, it seems, she has passed to you.

I only wish this message could include photos so I could show you the work I made in her honour. Ruth has since been taken on by a new owner, another fan of your books, who had the space to care for him better than I could.

If there is somewhere I could send the photo, it would be very much appreciated, I don’t know how much it interests you, but it would be nice to show you.

Thank you always, and please never stop writing.

Regards.

Kir

Dear Kirsty,

Thank you!

I hope your exhibition went well. I’m glad to hear that your Ruth has found a new home.

I hope that someday we can meet — perhaps when you’re exhibiting at a convention — and then you can show me in person!

As I say every so often, Mum chose two people to write on Pern with her: myself and my sister, Georgeanne (“Gigi”). I’m quite curious to see what Gigi gets up to!

Cheers,

Todd

Question from Wolfbaby

Question from Wolfbaby

I was just wondering if you’ve ever given any thought to a pre-Pern book. Something that maybe covers the Paul Benden, Emily Boll, and the rest of the colonists as they were getting the Pern expedition ready, that sort of thing.

I love Pern, and I love the dragons (of course!) but I think I’d really enjoy a backstory, as it were.

Wolfbaby,

Great minds think alike as they say!

Waayyy back when, Mum said to me, “I think there should be a mil-sf prequel to Pern and I want you to write it!”

Thereafter followed much excitement and thinking.

The problem is that it’s writing into a corner — we know how the story will end. Admiral Benden and Governor Boll will get to Pern just as described in Dragonsdawn.

Writing into a corner — moving toward a foregone conclusion is no fun. Also, while you are not the first to think of this, how many people would like this pre-Pern book more than they’d want another good tale told on Pern?

On the writing side, there’s the issue that, no matter what, all Pern fans know the ending and while Mum did an excellent job of keeping us in suspense with Moreta, it was always going to be the case that Moreta was going to be lost between — we knew that from the Ballad.

Anyway, the thought’s still there but there are other worlds I’m venturing on at the moment. Who knows? One day it might happen.

Cheers,

Todd
