  1. Todd,
How do I put this into words? The only thing that comes to mind is the scene of Menolly, standing at the prow of the ship, letting her drum fall into the sea as they slipped the body of Petiron into the sea, utterly bereft. It seems fitting that Anne’s own words would describe how so many of us feel at the loss of your mother. Would that there were truly dragons, other than those we carry in our heart thanks to Anne, to keen at her passing. The true Master Harper, the first Queen Rider, Mother, Friend, Scholar, Mentor, and so much more to so many. I and many thousands, perhaps millions, of others like me grieve with your family. Anne & her books have been a part of my life for over 30 years. Her writing helped me through some very dark times. Some years ago, we corresponded briefly and I mailed her a copy of “Dragonholder” to sign. With her inimitable sense of humor, she promptly & graciously returned it, signed ” The Other Woman”, in lipstick red, no less. At the time, she would have been about 72 yrs. old. I think, more than anything else, I will miss that humor & the sense of youth and romance in her writing that belied her age. For a long time, I had despaired of what would happen to Pern and all the rest of the worlds that Anne gave us when the inevitable came and she moved on to her next great adventure. When I first read “Dragonskin”, there was a ray of hope for the future. When “Dragonsblood” hit the stand, I knew that Pern was truly saved. Todd, when your friend Johnny was killed, your mother honored his memory by giving him alternate lives in many of her worlds Although we can never replace her, perhaps when the grief is not so sharp, you can find a way to let her live on in her world of Pern, as she will always live in our hearts. To you, Alec, and Gigi as well as the rest of her family, you have my deepest and most heartfelt condolences. To the rest of Anne’s legion of fans, as long as there are books, she will always be with us. To Annie, O m’nam, Go raibh meal maith agat! Oiche mhaith agus codladh samh, Beannacht leat agus Dia dhuit!
