[Update: 1/11/2012]

From the New York Times bestselling mother-and-son team of Anne McCaffrey and Todd McCaffrey comes the final installment in the riveting Pern saga that began with Todd’s solo novel, Dragonsblood. Now, with all of Pern imperiled by the aftereffects of a plague that killed scores of dragons and left the planet helpless against the fall of deadly Thread, the only hope for the future lies in the past.

There, on an unexplored island, a group of dragonriders led by Xhinna, a brave young woman who rides the blue dragon Tazith, must battle lethal Merows and voracious tunnel-snakes to build a safe home for themselves and the dragons, whose offspring will one day—if they survive—replenish Pern’s decimated dragon population. But as the first female rider of a blue dragon, and the first female Weyrleader in the history of Pern, Xhinna faces an uphill battle in winning the respect and loyalty of her peers . . . especially after an unforeseen tragedy leaves the struggling colony reeling from a shattering loss.

Amid the grieving, one girl, Jirana, blessed—or cursed—with the ability to foresee potential futures, will help Xhinna find a way forward. The answer lies in time . . . or, rather, in timing it: the awesome ability of the dragons to travel through time itself. But that power comes with risks, and by venturing further into the past, Xhinna may be jeopardizing the very future she has sworn to save.

  3. Awesome! What time line does this story take place in? I am dyeing to get back to the time of F’lar and Lessa and find out what happens “After The Fall.”

  4. Hi Kris, glad you’re excited! Sky Dragons follows on from Dragon’s Time — that is, it’s in the Third Pass.

I’m looking forward to Aggiecon, I’ve missed it these past couple of years.

  5. Thanks Todd. So looking forward to it as with all Pern books. Just curious, your Mom (Anne to me) eluded to working on “After The Fall.” The story of what becomes of the dragons and riders once thread pasees for the last time. Is it true? And if so when can we expect it?

  6. Todd: I tried to find a more appropriate place to leave this but couldn’t. Would like to extend my heart-felt condolences on the passing of your mother. I had the opportunity to meet several times over the years and have many autographed copies of her work as well as pictures take with her. My prayers are with you at this time.

  7. I am looking forward to this book. Trying to find Dargon’s Time. I hope you will continue your Mom’s work on the last Pern Book. She will be greatly missed.

  8. Just heard the awful news regarding the passing of your mother.
My condolences are with you and your entire family.

  9. What color dragon did Kindan…sorry K’dan…Impress at the end of Dragon’s Time? or is that something we’re not supposed to know until Sky Dragons is released? I always assumed he’d Impress bronze but I don’t remember any mention of the dragon’s color during the hatching passages.

  10. Todd, I just heard of your Mother’s passing this morning on my way to work. I can’t express how sorry I am for your (and the world’s) loss. Take care.

  11. Wonderful news about the book being finished.
I was so sad to hear about the passing of your mother. Please know that all of your family is in my prayers.

  12. Dear Todd,
It is always difficult to lose one’s mother, no matter one’s age, and so while we also grieve with you, for our own loss, know that you and your siblings are also in our thoughts and prayers.

  13. So sorry for your loss. Please know, you & your family are in our prayers. Anne will always be remembered in my family.

  14. Hello Todd,

My sincere condolences on the loss of your mother. White Dragon was the first novel I ever read and the book instilled within me the voracious appetite for reading that still continues to this day 25 years later. I have been a fan of the Pern series from that day forth. I anticipate greatly the release of Sky Dragons and know that your contributions to the continuation of the series will be just as great. When my nieces and nephews are old enough they too shall be introduced to the wonderful and imaginative world of Pern.

  15. Todd, I learned of your Mom’s passing from our mutual friend, Janis Ian.
My sincerest condolences on your loss. Words can’t express what her books have meant to me over the years. I hope you find comfort in knowing that although the world mourns, she will truly be remembered forever because of all the beautiful gifts she gave us.

  16. I just heard about Anne passing away. She was a wonderful person and writer, and will live forever in the pages of her books. I offer my most heartfelt condolences to you and your family. May she be happily beyond between.

  17. So very sorry for your loss, your mother was a remarkable woman and will be sorely missed.

    Jan xx

  18. Just wanted to tell you how deeply saddened I was with the passing of your beloved mother. She will be missed by all of her extended family in the world. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

  19. I just heard of Anne’s passing. I am truly very sorry and my condolences and prayers are with your family. The world has lost one of the greatest contributors to the Science Fiction and Fantasy genre.

  20. He Impressed a bronze. And yes, mea culpa, I forgot to say that — I knew what color he was.

  21. Hey Todd, I can’t wait for the new book. Funny, I assumed K’dan impressed a bronze and never realized it wasn’t mentioned! In Sky Dragon, will it expand further on the teaching ballad refering to the mating flight and hatching? It’s mentioned several times in Dragons Time, with some mystery around it and the last line “in a month – who seeks” but the reference seem to be left hanging. Is there going to be a revelation / conculsion to these references?

Also, are you thinking of writing any more in the Crystal Singer Line too? The last book left me thinking there may be more to come. I’d love one more book to tie the loose ends of Lars and Killa.

Keep up the awesome work! I love Pern series, and your mum’s writing, but your books have had me enthralled, from the first one. Your style is similar yet different and I am thrilled that you are continuing the story, in your own right, with your own subtle differences that make you a truly talented writer.

    Kind regards
    Kellie

  22. Thanks, Kellie.

I’m not sure about Crystal Singer, nor any of the other universes. In some of them, Mum felt that the tale was told.

  23. Todd,
My heartfelt sympathy about your mother. I had to stop and sit for a minute when I read of her death. Her books got me through the terrible teen years and have been a passion ever sense. I remember reading on her blog a while back about a final book on the last Pass of Pern. Was that real or just a figment of my imagination? Thank you so much for continuing the tradition – I have enjoyed Fiona and Kindan and their 3rd Pass adventures! Christmas does get easier as time passes! Your tribute to her tearing around in a car as she pulls up to the Pearly Gates was perfect!!
    Kind regards,
    Dana

  24. left this until things might have eased for you a bit. I have read every book your mom wrote and was pained to hear of her passing. I know tomorrow will be difficult for you but, I also know the pain passes and it does get better. Will look forward to your books with as much anticipation as I did hers.

  25. your mum will be dearly missed by all. I never missed one of her books, and I am so looking forward to this, the last joint work, I sincerely hope that you keep the series alive, because I believe that she and the dragons she so dearly loved would smile upon it.

  26. I know the holy sprite of your Mom will be with you all tomorrow. May you feel the brush of the wings!
I see 2 questions about the time after thread. I was so happy with your Mom’s Moreta ending. I to wished to know what happen to the people of the white dragon’s pass. We all know that in the end we all pass on, but now Lessa and crowd will remain as we last saw them. Kind of nice as well.
May the sprite of the holidays help them pass as well.

  27. I wish you well over the holiday season Todd my heart goes out to you. May pern live on forever.

  28. I too was very sorry to hear of your mothers passing, I loved all of her books and when you started writing with her was pleased to see another favorite author on the horizon. I look forward to reading both “Sky Dragons” and “City of Angels”.

  29. I was so sorry to hear about your mum. I loved reading all her books. I actually have all of them. It is very good that you have continued writing about Pern and her dragons. Will you be writing more about Pern?

  30. I am so so sorry to hear about your mother. I had no idea until now when I was googling for third pass timeline. Your mom is one of my favorite authors since I was a teen. I have never stopped re-reading her books and I am currently reading the Third Pass series. I am so glad you are continuing the stories of Pern.

  31. Jen, there’s a blurb out now. Check your favorite publisher. I’ve also updated the post to reflect it.

  32. I’m so very sorry to hear of the loss of your mum, but she’s not really lost so long as she is in your heart. I know you are currently writing the third pass of Pern, but will you, down the line, write more about the ninth pass? After the thread?
    No pressure honestly

    Pam Brisbane AUS

  33. it’s sad to hear that your mom passed away i love her books and yours on the dragon riders of pern.
i read 1 book and it kinda dragged me into the story i just couldn’t stop

  34. It looks like it’s scheduled to come out on the same date as the US, 26 June 2012.

  35. I too am hoping you continue the Lessa and Fl’ar story, after the fall.

  36. Todd, as so many others have said, your Mom’s books and now yours have been a source of reading pleasure since the teen years. I am truly sorry for the ending of an era as she is surely missed by many. I had hoped to learn more of Lessa and F’lar’s story also and will continue reading the stories that you create also. I have really enjoyed your creative addition to the Pern universe and hope that you continue publishing for many years.

  37. I am sorry to read of your mother passing last year it was her books that got me into reading in the first place after many years in the dark. I went from reading no books beyond what I had to do in school to reading every book that was out in the Pern series in less than six months after I got introduced to dragon song by one of my teachers at school. Things have been a bit crazy here with summer classes but on Saturday I am dropping by the book store to pick this book up for a good old 4 hour sit down and go cover to cover.

I too am itching to find out what happens at the end of the 9th pass and into what new works you have planned for the Pern series.

  38. So looking forward to this last collaboration. As much as I love my kindle, I will be buying the fist edition hardcover to complete my collection of Anne’s work. I also have most of the Pern books on the kindle and expect I will be including more of your work. Thanks for keeping te flame burning. Oh, and before I go. Any more news on the movie? I have gone back to the Copperheart web site, but it has less links than before and no mention of this proposed movie.
