Smash’n’Grab

Smash’n’Grab

Sigh.

It’s been a busy several weeks since Comic-Con.

My car was broken into, the rear passenger window smashed and my backup stolen — complete with laptop, camera, spare reading glasses, signed copy of Year Zero by Rob Reid, Sony digitial voice recorder, earbuds, steno pad with irreplaceable notes, various pens and, worst of all, the laptop had 1800 words on it that I hadn’t uploaded to Dropbox because I couldn’t get a network connection at Comic-Con.

I’ve managed to replace most everything and my renter’s insurance covered the physical loss, the car insurance deductible was too high to cover the window ($204) but the sense of violation — the theft was right in my apartment parking lot — really won’t go away.

Lesson learned, of course, is to never leave something of value, no matter how innucuous-looking, where someone might decide to steal it.

I guess the second lesson learned is that one can’t assume security through obscurity.

  1. Yeah, that feeling of violation doesn’t seem to want to go away. It still irks me that my car was broken into last year…right in my own driveway. I think it’s the fact that the crime was on my property that makes it that much harder to let go of it.

The rear passenger window was smashed after the key lock on the driver’s door was destroyed. All this damage to steal my car stereo. I spent more on repairing the damage to the car than I did buying the car stereo in the first place.

I guess I should be thankful it was only my car stereo that was stolen and not my camera gear and laptop.

Sorry I don’t have any words of encouragement other than you’re not alone and you have my empathy.
