Fate of the World

Fate of the World

I read New Scientist weekly and find it mostly fascinating. It includes quick summaries of some of the latest science and technological advances written at a graduate level.

They also do book reviews and seem, perhaps just for the holidays to have branched out into interesting games.

Fate of the World by Red Redemption is a very challenging game on global warming. For less than $10, it’s a steal.

The game is currently in Beta test but you can get the current version and play it, while providing feedback to the company and then, when the final version is released, you’ll get it for free.

The game will come with multiple scenarios but for the present it only comes with one. In this scenario, you must keep the world from warming more than 3 degrees Celsius by 2100. Winning this particular scenario is extremely difficult (I still haven’t won).

The game play, as you might expect for under $10 is not super-sophisticated, but the technology underlying it includes an advanced global economic and climate model.

So if you’re interested in seeing if you can save the world, or if you know someone who might be, this is a great, addicting, but somewhat depressing way to explore our future options.

And, for $9.99 US, it’s not a terrible drain on the pocket book.

Update I’ve managed to win the game 3 times now, although the world might not like the manner of it. In the last time, I even managed to keep about 5.7 billion people alive (hungry but alive). My first “success” had the world fritter away to a population of a mere 2.8 billion (eek).

Pern Match Game

Pern Match Game

I’ve just finished a class on Flash programming. (Those of you who signed on for my newsletter may have seen the FishTank game).

Of course I’ll be using Flash for the website and also for fun stuff.

I just finished producing the first verion of a Pern Match Game which challenges you to a memory match game with the Weyr symbols and twelve of the major Hold shields.

Go here to give it a try!
