Letter from Ashley

Dear Todd,
I noticed while reading the Pern stories that mainly the bronze and gold riders (and occasionally browns) are focused on in the stories rather than sharing the spotlight with the more plentiful green and blue riders, and I have yet to find a story that goes into much detail about the all important training. Are there any stories that I may have missed dealing with these parts of Weyr life?

I was also wondering if after thread has ended and dragons are no longer required to chew firestone, will this allow green dragons to clutch? I was wondering because F’lar explains to Lessa that a gold that chewed stone would be sterile, but in Dragonsdawn they talked about Kit Ping Young making the alteration. Which is it?

Ashley,

I think you might want to read a bit more about Mirrim, who Impresses a green dragon. I know she crops up in “All the Weyrs of Pern” and I can’t remember if she appears in “The Dolphins of Pern” (it’s been a while since I’ve read either).

I can’t remember the section you’re quoting from Dragonsdawn, would you drop me a note with a page number?

I don’t know if the dragons won’t still chew firestone after Threads have passed. I can see dragons be great natural fire-fighters and their ability to set back-fires would be much prized. However, it is also possible that it woudl be the case that at least some greens don’t chew firestone and would clutch.

Cheers,
Todd
