Another letter from Katy

Another letter from Katy

Hi again!

I was wondering , how often can I email you?

I mean I don’t want to be a bother or anything but I do so love sending letters to people and stuff.

Anyway I would just like to ask, why did you have Nuella be blind? Is there a special reason behind it? Because I had never really thought of some who’s blind being able to see like the way you described it – it was amazing.

Also, do you think Dragon’s Kin would ever become a film? Because you know I think it would be great as a film, but only if it was totally aproved of by the writers.

Oh, and if you live in Ireland how come you’ve never visited Holland? (That’s where I live by the way.) I think you might enjoy it . It’s a lovely place you know.

Thanks again,

Katy

Hi Katy!

Don’t mail me too often or I won’t get any more writing done! However, if you’re desperate, I can probably handle one letter week.

Nuella is blind because that’s the way she is. She’s suffering from some sort of mutation of retinitis pigmentosa which is a disease of the eye which causes it to fail slowly over the years. In her case, the failure occurs much faster than what normally occurs nowadays (people really do have this disease but they usually don’t lose their eyesight in a major way until their 30’s or so). So she could see as a child and knew what colors and images were but, as she got older, they started fading out until everything was just a blur. Because of that, Nuella would understand “seeing” in different ways and that was what was required for her to understand how the watch-wher saw.

I think of all the books, Dragonflight is probably the best candidate for a film — followed by Dragonquest, The White Dragon, and All the Weyrs of Pern. I think the Harper Hall series (the books with Menolly) would probably make a great TV series. I think that making Dragon’s Kin into a movie would be nice but probably more difficult in some respects than Dragonflight.

I don’t live in Ireland — Mum does. I visit Ireland quite a bit. I was in Holland several times and I had a marvelous time at the World Science Fiction Convention “ConFiction” in Den Haag in 1990.

Cheers,
Todd
