Letter from Annkatrin

Hi Todd,

It’s great that you will again hold a Writer’s Workshop at DragonCon this year! I know quite a few people who regretted not being able to participate last year. Thanks for sharing your wisdom as a professional writer with the “newbies”!

I’ve seen on the Weyrfest website that you might also hold a panel about the “Science of Pern”. I was wondering, what will this be about? I’m very interested in all things Pern and all things science, so the combination is rather intriguing.

Do you have specific plans already, or are you still open for suggestions? Things I’d like to learn more about for example are:

* Pern’s two moons, their cycles and their effects on the tides and weather

* Does it create a thunderclap when a dragon ‘pops’ in or out of Between? A paragraph in Dragonflight indicates it does:
“The claxon rang violent summons into the air, barely heard over the earsplitting thunder as hundreds of dragons appeared, ranging in full fighting array, wing upon wing, up and down the valley.”

* How does Between work anyway? Dragon-induced distortion of the space-time-continuum?

* Pernese genetics (fire-lizard genetics, dragon genetics, how they differ, how a DNA triple helix would hold together and replicate)

* prehistoric life on Pern and how evolution adapted Pern’s lifeforms to Thread

* How do they make agenothree during 9th Pass Pern (the “alchemistic method” mixing vitriol and salpeter, or do they know about catalysts?), and how do they keep the acid from corroding the tanks?

I’m sure I could find more questions if you still need ideas. Looking forward to seeing you and your mom again at DragonCon this year!

Cheers,
Annkatrin

Hi Annkatrin!

Thanks for the ideas — I hadn’t thought about the two moons (I don’t want to think about the two moons, “these are not the moons you’re looking for”).

I don’t plan on answering all the questions concerning Pern — partly because I’m still thinking about them. I will talk a bit about Pernese genetics, however. And I already know all about the “thunderclaps”, so I’ll tell you more on the panel.

I’ve got a few of my own but I’ll certainly consider adding yours to the list.

Looking forward to seeing you at Dragon*con!

Cheers,
Todd
