Letter from Sue

Hi!

I just finished reading Dragonsblood (at which point my sister snatched it from me) and have to say that is one awesome book! A bit dark, but then Pern is not all sweetness and light the way so many people try to imagine it. I loved the book and I love the way Wind Blossom and the watch-whers are vindicated in it. That was the best part of all.

Having a steady job again I’m finally able to start getting hold of the books as well. I have one short story (Beyond Between) and one more book (Dragon’s Kin) to go. That was next on my list but when I saw this one, I remembered what you said at DragonCon a couple years ago, that the story had the information about why the fire lizards are scarce in the north and that dragonpair found in rock at Benden. So I got Dragonsblood first. Thanks for an awesome book!

Caryn

Hello, Caryn,

I’m glad that you liked Dragonsblood. And I’m glad that the watch-whers worked for you. You’ll see more of them in Dragon’s Kin — which is a prequel to Dragonsblood (Kindan is only 10 at the start of Dragon’s Kin while he was 26 in Dragonsblood).

Of course, Mum and I are trying to stay ahead of you — we’re working on Dragon’s Fire right now.

Cheers,
Todd

Hi, Todd

I love your books and wanted to thank you and your Mom. For I had been very sick and bed ridden for a month. Then just as I got well, I got sick again. Though reading and escaping to Pern made it a time to get to know my Mom again, who also reads McCaffrey books as well. So now that I’m well I just wanted to thank you for the mother daughter reunion.

I also had some questions.

After I had read all my books five times my Father decided to go to a used book store and buy some that I didn’t have. Well, I ended up with a book called “Carmen Miranda’s Ghost is Haunting Space Station Three” with a short story in it titled “If Madam Likes You” by Anne McCaffrey. I was wondering if this was written by the Anne we know or another by the same name. I can’t find it on her site. I realize that Anne has written many short story’s for sci-fi magazines. So if this question can’t be answered I understand.

Also what is the name of the choose your own adventure story you wrote?

Thanks so much
Sue

Hello Sue,

I’m glad to hear you’re well again and pleased to hear that our books were the start of a mother-daughter reunion.

Yes, Mum did indeed write “If Madam Likes You.”

The title of the Choose-Your-Own Adventure I wrote was Slammers Down! and it was published by Ace in 1988 back when I was still Todd Johnson. There’s a picture of the cover in my Todd’s Bookshelf. It’s at the bottom of the page, the fourth from the left.

Cheers,
Todd

If you haven’t been to a World Science Fiction convention, consider Interaction this summer.

Mum and I will be there.

Going to Dragon*con

Going to Dragon*con

It’s official, Mum and I are planning to get back to Dragon*con this year.

In Mum’s case, it’s “health permitting,” of course but she looked pretty hale when I was over for New Year’s and reported that she’s doing well when I spoke with her today.
