Letter from Ashley

Hello,

I just wanted to say that I have only gotten into Pern within the last year and a half maybe a tiny bit longer, and I have never been so completely engulfed in anything in my life. To be honest the first time I read Dragonflight I was so captivated because I felt like i was experiencing everything the characters did.

I was truly afraid that it would be ruined when it was passed on to you. (sorry) When Dragon’s Kin came out I bought it the soonest I found a copy…Despite my first impression…”this is so short” let me just say you did an amazing job on it, I am glad that the Whers have finally got some recognition out of Dragonflight. And actually give us more information than besides the fact that they are “ugly” and are nocturnal.

You impressed me even more wtih Dragonsblood. Congratulations. I am no longer afraid that the Pern series has fallen into the wrong hands and I can’t wait until the next novel. Despite getting to read about F’lessan and Tai and everyone from Skies of Pern, but I am so glad that there are new characters.

Do you think that there will ever be a movie or television series for Dragonriders of Pern. I hope so that would be amazing to see. I truly hope that it will happen.

Thanks for reading my letter.

A truly devoted fan,
Ashley

Hello Ashley,

Thanks for writing! I’m glad that you liked the Dragonriders of Pern and that you found Dragon’s Kin and Dragonsblood worthy additions!

I think someday there will be a movie (or series of movies like Harry Potter) made from Mum’s books (I’d love to see Dragonflight brought to life). The books have been optioned serveral times already but the time has never been quite right — a lot of luck is required to get things done in film/TV. Keep your fingers crossed!

Cheers,
Todd

Hi Todd

I was reading the letter’s page and noticed a question, I had asked once, came up. I had asked about crossover’s. I wondered about all the worlds being connected, though that wasn’t how I asked.

Recently I reread the Brainship, Crystal Singer and The Girl Who Heard Dragons anthology. I noticed they all had Brainships. This is what I found and guessed from it, please tell me if I made some mistakes. I know Anne says they’re separate universes but this confuses me:

Brainships:
1) Brainship: Samel, Brawn: Chadria in Killashandra.
Brainship: Brendan, Brawn: Boira in Crystal Lines.
Though, I wasn’t sure if this made Crystal Singer an
extension of the Brainship series or not.
2) Brainship: Bill Hansing, Brawn: (a Hrruban) B’ghra
Hrrunalkharr in Duty Calls (During the Khalian War).
This, to me, connects the Brainships and Doona series.
3) Damia in The Mandalay Cure (During the Khalian War).
I haven’t read Damia yet but I assumed this connects Doona
to Damia.

In the end I thought that connected Doona, Damia, Killashandra and the Brainship series. I must confess that this was fueled because the idea of All The Worlds of Anne McCaffrey having some kind of connection, if you could just find it, does seem fun to me, sorry.

Also the story Jane asked about is in The Chronicles of Pern: First fall anthology.

Thanks again
Sue.

Hi Sue,

Mum occasionally borrows an idea she’s familiar with when she needs it for a different story but that doesn’t mean she wants to connect the universes.

I think the idea of connecting the universes goes back to Heinlein’s desire to do so with his books.

Mum doesn’t have the same desire. I think she’s probably right. If you were to expose Pern to the rest of the universe, you’d lose all the great stories of the Pernese fighting against incredible odds and replace them with stories that weren’t quite as powerful. They sound nice when thrown out as one-liners but they really don’t produce a compelling story.

Cheers,
Todd

Letter from Marla

I just wanted to say I just finished reading Dragonsblood. I couldn’t put it down. One might wonder, what difficulty the Dragonriders of Pern might face next, or could it have something to do with the Watch-whers. Thank you so much for giving us more Pern. Some of us can’t get enough!

Thanks Marla!

Mum and I are working on more Pern!

Cheers,
Todd

Letter from C.A.

Todd,

Just finished reading “Dragon’s Blood.” I admit I was a little apprehensive about this book. having read “mum’s” stories, I was worried about changes in style and content. I didn’t have to worry. You can’t see the joins!! The story style appeared no different to all that has gone before on Pern. The story was well written, with a very good plot and well defined characters. I was pleased to see that you were able to deal with a couple of mysteries as well. Why was there a secret room at Benden and why have the watchweyrs declined in favour.

Is the McCaffrey firm planning to answer some more Pern mysteries? For example, will Golanth be able to fly on his own? Will Toric get his come-uppence, and will F’lessen and Tai become an item? (I still keep re-reading Skies of Pern!).

Again, congratulations on a very well written story. Here’s hoping for many more to come.

regards,

C.A.

C.A.,

Thanks for the kind words about Dragonsblood.

I can’t say what will happen with F’lessan and Tai — I think that’s more Mum’s story to tell than mine.

However, there will be more stories and mysteries answered regarding Pern, rest assured.

Right now we’re working on a tale about firestone, currently called Dragon’s Fire.

Cheers,
Todd
