The Writers of the Future Awards, Encinitas, CA

The Writers of the Future Awards, Encinitas, CA

As you may know, Mum is one of the judges for the L. Ron Hubbard Presents Writers of the Future and has been since the inception of the contest.

This year, the Awards ceremony was held in Encinitas, California in the Air&Space Museum. It was quite a show and the winners represented people from all over the world.

Mum and I had a blast at the booksigning at Mysterious Galaxy. We had to be extra careful about her hand and took several time-outs to let her recover.

You can see photos of her (and me) here.

How’s Mum?

How’s Mum?

Mum seems to be doing reasonably well, recovering from her long August sojourn in the States.

She’s also really thrilled about her new electric cart — I think she was spoiled by all the conventions this summer. But at 80+, and with two artifical knees (one much newer than the other), she’s allowed.

I spoke with her Monday while driving my daughter to school. As I live in LA which is 8 hours behind Dublin time, my calling when I’m just up means that she’s getting my call in the mid-afternoon. We didn’t say much, I just called to see how she was and tell her that I loved her (general rule: you can never tell someone you love them too much or too often).

A few updates

A few updates

(As you’ve noticed, I’m well behind here.)

Let’s see, updates to come:

1. Writers of the Future Report
2. Worldcon report
3. Dragon*con Report (don’t forget to check out the kilt photos)!

When will you see these reports? By the end of the week.

I’ve updated my Appearances section to add ConDorXIV and Aggiecon38.

The folks at AggieCon, bless them, are now referring to me as a “Regional.” This is not to reflect a Texas desire for aggrandizement (enlarging the state to include the whole Southwest) but simply because I’ve been coming so often that they’re hoping that I’ll move. And, in fact, there was some discussion of moving but it didn’t pan out.

I suspect that I might soon be receiving an invitation for Loscon which is Los Angeles’ local science fiction convention.
