Hi Todd

I was going to email your Mum, but couldn’t find an email address. Just wanted to say thanks, firstly to your Mum, I discovered Pern when my sister was given Dragonsinger when I was 12 and 23 years later I’m still well and truly hooked. So thank you both very much for your amazing books, I wondered when I first saw your book if it would be as good, well at 2 in the moring after I had finished it, I reckoned it was. THANKS!!!!

Thanks, Kate!

Dragon Harper will be out soon and I’m working on the sequel to Dragonsblood which is (tentatively) titled Dragon’s Time.

Cheers,
Todd

Dear Todd,

First I will echo nearly everyone who’s written you, and thank you profusely for continuing Pern. I, thankfully, missed the rumors that your mother was going to give up Pern, but still had a dreadful fear that eventually she would have to quit. It’s an incredible relief to know that Pern will continue even after she’s gone (hopefully many, many years from now!) Dragonsblood is now one of my top 3 favorites, along with Dragonsdawn, which was where I first discovered Pern, and Masterharper of Pern. I must say that Robinton is my all-time favorite character, and I found myself crying in the bookstore when I realized Anne had written a book entirely devoted to him. I bought it on the spot, even though we were rather broke at the time. My husband also thinks it’s rather unique that we have a portrait of Robinton (done by Robin Wood)on the same wall as our family pictures. He feels like family.

Okay, now having gushed sufficiently, I have a question to ask that’s been driving my crazy. Having “lived” on Pern for the past 20 years or so, I questioned my sanity a bit while reading Dragonsblood. Wasn’t Wind Blossom Kitty Ping’s granddaughter, not daughter? I understand why you might change that, but please let me know if my edition was wrong or something. I have found typos in my copy of Dragonsdawn, so just want to know. Thanks!

Angela

Hi Angela,

Thank you.

You’re not insane with regards to Wind Blossom — you just don’t live in the UK. In the UK Wind Blossom is Kitti Ping’s daughter, a change that Mum made which didn’t get back into the US edition.

I, dutiful son that I am, in picking a copy of Dragonsdawn for reference, very carefully chose one from the larger pile of author’s copies — the UK pile; neither Mum nor I at the time believing there to be any difference. The discrepancy was noted long before Dragonsblood was published and when/if there’s a new US edition of Dragonsdawn issued, the text will be changed.

Cheers,
Todd

Dear Mr. McCaffrey,

First of all I would like to thank you, as everyone does, for you and your mum’s wonderful world that you have given us horrible, consumer-driven schmucks to escape to! I am an avid fan and buy as many Pern books as I can get my hands on! 😀

Secondly, I would like to ask a question/ make a request if such a thing as my inquiry is asking for is not already in the works. I see that there have been a number of games created around Pern over the years, and Chronicles was, I can say, thoroughly entertaining. I have in recent years become quite a geek, and my question is this: As and avid fan of World of Warcraft(c) and now the new LoTR online games, I was wondering if there were any plans underway for a Pern MMORPG? There could, I think, be great potential for a something like this, and with such an array of time and characters to act as NPC’s, this would be my dream come true…to really be in/on Pern!

Just food for thought!

Thanks for all you do!

Love always,
Charity

Dear Charity,

All rights for Pern are currently tied up with the film deal. The good news about that is that when a MMORPG does come about, it may well be able to leverage film-quality animations — which would make a truly great place in which to play!

Cheers,
Todd

Love Pern. My escape world. I go there all of the time. I now have most all of the books and I read them over and over again. Need to get Dragons blood, fire and harper. Been thinkimg of a twist – how about having a male impress a queen and a female impress a bronze. Am looking forward to a movie or a series of them. Hope they won’t cut them up too much. Usually the books are better except for The Green Mile, movie much better. Please keep up the good work for us Pern dreamers. Love you much and please pass on to your Mom my best wishes, prayers and gratitude for giving me another world to live in. Thank you so very much.
Love Mary

Sorry Mary,

Mum is very explicit that queens only impress females.

Cheers,
Todd
