Letter from Donna

Dear Mr. McCaffrey,

I am a fan of Dragonriders of Pern and have read every novel about Pern that you and your Mother have written. I am currently reading the Dragon Harper and am looking forward to your next installment. I will never get tired of reading about Pern and it’s inhabitants. I sincerely hope that you never get tired of writing about them.

Also, I was wondering if your wonderful Mother will be planning to write another exciting novel about the Crystal Singer, Killashandra.

Thanks for taking the time to answer my e-mail.

Donna

Dear Donna,

I hope you enjoyed Dragon Harper. Mum was pleased with the result, too.

I don’t think Mum has any plans for more Crystal Singer books. I think she feels that she’s told all the stories she needs to tell in that universe.

I’m sorry that it took so long to respond to your mail, as you may have seen elsewhere, I managed to lose a bunch of mail (we changed servers and it took me this long to wonder why no one was writing!).

Cheers,
Todd

Dear Todd,

I finished you and your mother’s lastest collaboration. A very wonderful book. I found my self in tears in some parts of the book. I have become a fan of yours from the first book that you and your mother worked on. I, also, have the ones that you wrote solo about Pern. Needless and pointless to say, but I will say it any way, I have enjoy reading all the books pertaining to Pern. Once I pick up a book about Pern, it is hard to put it down or put it aside to do some thing else. I would like to say thanks to you and your mother for the wonderful thrill of reading about Pern and all that is associated with Pern. I look forward to the next publication and future publications about Pern. God bless you and your mother. Again, thanks for the wonderful reading.

Arthur

Dear Arthur,

I’m glad! I hope by now — with all the terrible delay in my figuring out that I had been missing mail — you’ve had a chance to enjoy Dragonheart. I’ve turned in the sequel, Dragongirl, and Mum and I are “noodling” on the next collaboration together.

As you may have noticed, I’ve chopped off your last name from your letter. I do that to maintain your privacy (I’d hate to think that someone could use these letters to spam Pern fans!) but I must say that I really enjoy your e-mail address!

Cheers,
Todd

Todd,

I love all the Pern books and can’t wait to read the latest unfortunately I get them for Christmas and my birthday every year and some one decided that December 26 was a good time to release a book. Sigh, so I’m still waiting on my birthday.

However I heard that the Pern Movie is being projected for 2011 but other then that no news. Can this truly be confirmed or deigned or are you still sworn to secrecy? Please, I’ve been waiting for real news of a movie since I learned to read. I’m sure many others have been waiting a long time too.

Sue

Sue,

I don’t know where you heard a 2011 rumor for a film. I wish it were true.

I don’t have any real news regarding films. We all live in hope, particularly as Mum just celebrated her eighty-third birthday and we’d all really like for her to see dragons on the big screen.

Cross fingers, say prayers, use any incantations you can!

As soon as there’s anything to say, we’ll be glad to shout about it!

Cheers,
Todd

Hi Todd,

I had emailed you before but I guess I was not chosen so I thought I would try again. I wanted to ask a couple questions. First I wanted to know if anyone has ever designed a badge for the Glass Craft??? I am a glass artist and I have been looking and can’t find anything for the glass craft, even in The Dragon Lover’s Guide to Pern. Second I wanted to know if you plan on ever having Homosexual main characters. It seems that since there are gay people on pern at least one of them would find there way to playing an important role on Pern. Also I know this will probably never change but why can a man not impress a queen? If a man can impress a green shouldn’t everyone have an equal chance of impressing a dragon of either sex.

Thanks!!!
Joseph

Hi Joseph,

No, I don’t think anyone’s designed a badge for the Glass Craft. I could be wrong as Pern fandom has a life of its own.

Gay people play a huge role on Pern. But being gay just isn’t a big deal on Pern — it’s an accepted fact of life.

As to queens being Impressed by males — nope, never going to happen. The nature of the queen dragon is that she’s attracted to strongly heterosexual women and nothing else. I didn’t make that rule, Mum did. I think I understand her underlying reasoning, as she wanted to tell tales about strong women in strong positions (Dragonflight was written in the very earliest days of feminism). The same applies to bronzes and browns with regards to heterosexual males.

That said, don’t forget that the bulk of the dragons of Pern are green and blue and the majority of those riders are male.

Cheers,
Todd
