Month: October 2011

Have you read… ?

Have you read… ?

I was in a conversation with a friend of mine who has only starting exploring science fiction and she said, “Please send me a list” of the books I thought she should read in the genre.

So… rather that just sending her a list, I’ve decided to build an ongoing list which you can find here (“Have you read this yet?”).

It’s clearly not complete and I’ll (hopefully) be updating it as I get the chance but I thought you might all enjoyj.

100 Year Starship Symposium

100 Year Starship Symposium

I’m still absorbing what I learned at the 100 Year Starship Symposium held in Orlando, Florida last weekend (30 Sep – 2 Oct, 2011) under the auspices of DARPA where 600 people from all across the globe gathered to discuss how, why, where, when, and whether could we build a starship.

The short answer to the big question is:

Yes, we can build a starship in 100 years.

Maybe sooner.

There are lots of smaller questions that go into that big question and some of them modify the answer quite a bit.

As I get my head together more, I’ll write more on the subject.

Rest Well, Steve Jobs

Rest Well, Steve Jobs

I’ve just heard that Steve Jobs passed away this evening.

I’m not an Apple fan, nor an iPod, iPhone, iAnything fan. Still, there is no denying the man’s great legacy.

And I think what he said in his speech to the Stanford class of 2005 is inspirational and bears repeating:

“Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do.

If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on.”
