Welcome Home!

This is the website for Pern and The Dragonriders of Pern™.

Pern never would have existed if it hadn’t been for the mind of Anne McCaffrey, the author of almost all the Pern books.

Pern would never have existed if her agent, the late Virginia Kidd, hadn’t said to her of her fledgling effort at Weyr Search, “Oh, Annie, please finish it!”

Pern would never have existed if her editor at Analog, the late John W. Campbell, hadn’t coaxed her into expanding her story into a novelette and then, hadn’t extolled her on writing more in the same world, ultimately producing the novellas and novelettes Weyr Search, Dragonrider which became the bulk of the first Pern novel, Dragonflight.

And Pern would never have existed if Betty Ballantine, editor at Ballantine Books (later Random House/Del Rey), had not insisted upon going over her draft of the sequel, Dragonquest, line by line until she finally looked at Annie and said, “You know, Annie, this story isn’t about F’lar and Lessa, it’s about F’nor and Brekke.”

And Pern would never have existed if it hadn’t been for the marvelous Andre Norton coming to Anne McCaffrey and saying, “You should write more Pern stories and you should write about a white dragon who should be a sport.”

And Pern certainly wouldn’t be what it is today if it hadn’t been for Beth Blish, Virginia Kidd’s daughter, suggesting to Anne McCaffrey that she write a set of young adult novels set on Pern — giving us all the joys of Dragonsong, Dragonsinger, and Dragondrums.

And Anne McCaffrey herself says that it was the brilliant Michael Whelan covers which got her books to “pop off the shelves.”

And so here you’ll find not only the books that are Pern but also links to the authors, artists, history, science, and many other aspects of what has become a world loved by millions.

Enjoy!

  4. I’m thrilled that you have created this Pern site, Todd. I’m 60 and I’ve been reading and rereading Anne McCaffrey’s books, especially the Pern ones, for many years. I’m now enjoying your books on Pern and I’m so glad you are continuing the tradition but in your own style. Long may this enjoyment continue …

  5. And how glad we ALL are that Anne McCaffrey did finish that first book and that Pern does indeed exist, and that Todd McCaffrey is continuing in his mother’s glorious tradition!

Thanks for this website and for the newsletters, Todd. We can’t wait to see the next book. Cheers!
