What is the complete list of Pern books in the order they are supposed to be read?

What is the complete list of Pern books in the order they are supposed to be read?

There’s a complete list of Mum’s works at her website, annemccaffrey.net under Books -> Bibliography. Under Books -> Series, you can pick the Dragonriders of Pern and get just the Pern books.

The Pern Museum and Archives has a great PDF listing here.

Chronologically, the current order would be:

In the first Pass:
Dragonsdawn
The Chronicles of Pern: First Fall

In the Second Pass:
Dragonseye

In the Third Pass:
Dragon’s Kin
Dragon’s Fire
Dragon Harper

Dragonsblood
Dragonheart
Dragongirl
Dragon’s Time
Dragonrider (tentative title)

In the Sixth Pass:
Moreta: Dragonlady of Pern
Nerilka’s Story

In the Ninth Pass:
Dragonflight
Dragonsong
Dragonquest
Dragonsinger (overlaps with Dragonquest)
The White Dragon
Dragondrums (overlaps with The White Dragon)
Masterharper of Pern (overlaps with all of the above and more)
Renegades of Pern
The Girl Who Heard Dragons (anthology)
All The Weyrs of Pern
The Dolphins of Pern
The Skies of Pern

Also note that the three-book omnibus, “The Dragonriders of Pern” encompasses Dragonflight, Dragonquest, and The White Dragon.

“A Gift of Dragons” is a collection of short stories which are mostly set in the Ninth Pass.

There are also some other short stories published in various places.

  1. This helps alot.
I kept trying to keep track of which book to read next, which incidentally got me off track HA.
I just love Pern, I honestly didn’t realize how long ago the first books were published.
I began reading them in 6th grade, and haven’t stopped.

  2. Well… as for how the books SHOULD have been read, that would not have been possible for me. I started reading Pern books with Dragonflight which was what was written first right after it came out. After than I snagged each one as it was published and replaced my old falling apart copies of the first books with newer copies. I love Pern and have been a fan from the start of the whole thing.

    HUGS,
    Orpha

  3. Did the proposed title of Dragonrider become Dragon’s Time instead?
And was your wonderful Mother able to finish her promised book, After the Fall is Over?

  4. Mary,

    Yes to the first question.

I can’t answer the second; I understand the manuscript is with her agent.

    Cheers,
    Todd

  5. Thank you this really helps I got so confused with the newer books in the new adventures of perm.
I have just read from dragons holder thru to dragon girl and need to know what to read next.
you see im a online only(for now I hope) author living in Australia and I read a lot of fantasy and scifi books for inspiration.

p.s is dragons time out in Australia yet?

  6. Dragon’s Time is out and that would be your next book. The sequel to it, Sky Dragons is out in hardcover, and it’ll be out in paperback June or July this year.

You have me confused, though: Dragonholder is the non-fiction Dragonholder: The Life and Times (so far) of Anne McCaffrey (perhaps you meant Dragon Harper?).

    Cheers,
    Todd
