Are you planning on writing a lot of Pern novels?

Are you planning on writing a lot of Pern novels?

The short answer is: Yes (see In the Third Pass here). I have a number of ideas that I’d like to pursue in the Third Pass, which could lead to a number of novels. A lot depends upon how well the current novels are received.

  1. Has anyone asked the Syfy channel to do Pern books?
Please send me an email when your books come out, thank you.
I plan to get audio and hardback.

  2. Pam, it’s the other way around — if Syfy were interested they’d contact Mum’s agent.
I’m afraid I can’t keep track of every request to be notified when the next book comes out, but if you sign up for my newsletter, I’ll certainly announce it there! (The link is here)

  3. Hi Todd, the link at the top of the page (to the Third Pass books) is broken 🙁 Can you please fix it? Thanks!

  4. Hi Todd,
The link at the top of this page – from your answer to the FAQ. “Yes (see In the Third Pass here).” 🙂

  5. Skip, according to amazon.com and bn.com the next book, currently titled Sky Dragons, will be out in May 2012 (just in time for the Mayan calendar to run out!)

  6. AH!! They are making us WAIT!~!!!! I pre-ordered it and this was the message.
QUOTE: “This book will be auto-delivered wirelessly to your Kindle on June 26, 2012”

    buggers! 😛

    Thats ok… worth the wait!!

I hope your ideas are able to go forward for the Third Pass Todd.
Hope your day is a Good Day 🙂

  7. Will one of your upcoming books follow up on the metasynth cats on the southern continent? Your mother had several references to them, one in the “Dawn of Pern” and one in a novel that included the traders of the southern continent.

I have read “fairy tales” and folk lore for as long as I can remember, and your mother’s fairy tales for grownup kids, no matter the world defining them, have given me, my husband, and my daughter (who is 40 this month) many years of avid reading.

    Thanks.
    Pat

  8. Dear Todd: Please accept my deepest condolences for a loss that can never be assuaged…she’s a rare soul that will always be missed. She changed my life in many ways over the years and her books were always my friends..

I saw something at Amazon.com that pretty much gave me a moment of panic and I thought that surely it can’t be true… It said, for Sky Dragons, that it was the “final installment”. Is this true?? Will there be no more Pern novels? Please say it isn’t so… We, as readers, know this world “lives and evolves” with every new book and I know most of us wish we lived there…thread or no thread. I for one, really want to read the “after the fall” book. Is the something we’ll see in the future? I know it was your mothers special project.

Thank you so very much for all the hours of reading pleasure you and your mother have given me!

    Most sincerely yours,

    Kathleen Dill

  9. Kathleen,

Right now everyone is still recovering from Mum’s loss. At this moment there are no more books under contract.

That doesn’t mean there aren’t ideas for new books, however!

  10. Pat,

I think you’re referring to Dragonsdawn. If you’ve caught up with all the Third Pass books, including the newly-released Sky Dragons, you’ll have a bit of an answer to your question.

  11. Dearest Todd….I totally understand and sympathize. It’s so hard to lose a parent, no matter how old you are. I’ve lost a parent as well and I know how it is to have to take time to heal. Whenever you decide its time to start again, I for one, will buy every book you decide to publish! You are so inspirational and when I’ve been “down”, your books always make me feel so much better…they’re the best therapy there is. I thank you so very much for this “outlet” and in the mean time, I’ll just re-read the entire series over and over again until you feel it’s time to add to it. I wish I could give you a BIG bear hug in hopes that it would give you some of the happiness that your books have given me. So please know that I’m sending you a “zen hug”. Those are the hugs I would give you if I were there to give them to you personally. Please know that your readers are always keeping you in their hearts in hopes that we can ease your pain. Most sincerely yours, Kathleen

  12. Todd,
I thoroughly enjoyed the latest book: Sky Dragons but thought (according to a list you once posted) that there’d be one more after this but from your above comment, that isn’t true? Is Sky Dragons really the final book about Lorana, Fiona, and K’dan?
I do hope you keep writing and visiting Pern. I have enjoyed your explorations there!!!
    Cindy

  13. Cindy,

I certainly have more stories for the Third Pass in mind. There are a lot of things to be settled now with the Estate and so on which may cause a bit of a delay, however.

  14. I would like to see a continuation of the story about Leesa and F’lar. The last thing was that they were blasting the Red Star out of it’s orbit, but what happens next?

  15. In the book dragonsdawn there was mention made of a group called true humans. I have always wondered about them. Also why have no other humans visited Pern. I wonder what would happen when true humans met the dragonriders.

  16. I’m always interest in Pern novals and will miss the ones from your mom but I know I will like the ones you write too. Please send me emails when they come out . I have almost all of the books from your mom. Do you have any books out.

  17. Todd,

I loved and own your entire 3rd pass set and I hope you do more! I love your writing and your ideas of bringing fresh new stories to Pren! Please continue!

  18. Alex,

Thank you! Right now we’re still getting the Estate sorted. I’ve been writing a lot of non-Pern stories mostly because it was time to take a break (after 8 Pern books).

I’ve still got ideas for Pern and I’m also hoping that we’ll get some novels from my sister, Georgeanne Kennedy, who is the other person specifically called out in Mum’s Will as being allowed to writer on Pern.

    Cheers,
    Todd

  19. Hi Todd! It’s Kathleen here again….Curiosity is killing the cat as they say….do you think “After the Pass” (or whatever it may be titled), will be published in the future? I’m sure I speak for everybody when i say that we would be absolutely thrilled to read this final book from your mother….I’d be pre-ordering it the day it hit Amazon… ;o) What a treat it would be for us all. I’m so looking forward to what your sister has to offer as well. I’m sure it will be as brilliant as yours!

Best wishes to you and your family for a wonderful Holiday season and a fantastic New Year!

    Most sincerely yours,
    Kathleen Dill

  20. Kathleen,

I don’t know at the moment. The dust is still settling. I do know that everyone involved with Pern understands how much people would like to see this last book of Mum’s.

    Cheers,
    Todd
